Five suspects, aged between 26 and 46, were arrested by members of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) during weekend operations.

On September 10, at 11:30, members were conducting a vehicle search checkpoint at the N12, Daveyton off-ramp, when a white Toyota Avanza, with four occupants was pulled over.

“The occupants were acting suspiciously which prompted officers to conduct a thorough search of the vehicle,” said Warrant Officer Grant Giblin, BFS spokesperson.

“An unlicensed 9mm pistol with six live rounds of ammunition was found hidden under one of the vehicle’s mats, wrapped in a cloth.

“One of the occupants was also found in possession of 38 packets of cocaine.”

The suspects were arrested and the vehicle impounded.

In the early hours of September 11, patrolling members came across a stationary taxi on the N12, near the Sundry off-ramp.

Passengers alleged that the vehicle had broken down and that the driver had called for assistance.

“While waiting at the side of the road, a white Mazda Rustler, with four armed men, stopped by the taxi,” said Giblin.

“Holding the passengers at gunpoint the suspects demanded all their personal belongings before speeding off towards Etwatwa.”

Officers gave chance and attempts to pull the vehicle over resulted in a shoot-out.

“The vehicle was finally brought to a stop, when the driver drove into a cul-de-sac,” he said.

“Three suspects managed to escape, however one was arrested.

“All the taxi passengers’ belongings were found in the vehicle.”
